Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a middle school teacher in a Title I charter school, I have the privilege of teaching students from a variety of cultural and economic backgrounds. Our school is rich with diversity. A majority of our students speak a second language at home including, Spanish, Vietnamese, Arabic, Amharic, and Turkish. Many of my diverse group of students also come from low-income families. Along with their diverse backgrounds, my students also have various learning abilities. Many of my students perform below grade level and are considered "at-risk." In addition, some of these same students are faced with learning disabilities such as dysgraphia, dyslexia, and ADHD.
Although my students come from different backgrounds and abilities, they all share a love of reading and learning.
For many of my students, the transition to 6th grade can be difficult. Students are introduced to higher level texts and often struggle with reading comprehension and critical thinking. Because of this, many students become discouraged and no longer find reading enjoyable. With your help, my goal is to provide my students with the tools and skills necessary to become avid readers and writers.
My Project
Scholastic Magazines have been an integral part of our classroom resources. I would like to continue using these magazines to introduce fiction and nonfiction reading material to my 6th grade students.
With Scholastic Magazines, my students will be able to read short, engaging fiction and nonfiction texts.
All of my students will be able to benefit from the variety of topics, texts, and reading levels that are found in these magazines. Having a choice and reading texts that are interesting will help my students become lifelong readers! Even my reluctant and struggling readers have found success with this amazing resource!
In order to keep our magazines new, organized and accessible, I am also requesting a magazine rack. With this rack, my students will be able to easily access the magazines during our independent reading time.
