My Students
I love to quote Dr. Seuss to my students, especially "The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go." My students will be moving on to middle school next year and I feel that it is my duty to learn to love to read before they leave me.
My 5th grade students range in ages of 10-12 years old.
They are a very lively bunch, mostly because it is almost all girls. They are my sweetest group that I have ever had. There are 28 children in my class, plus a gifted 4th grader that spends half the day with me. Of the 29, 19 of the students are girls. We are located in the capital city of West Virginia, close to downtown. More than half of our students are from low socio-economic homes. They love to read and to have lunch-bunch with me as often as possible.
My Project
I am requesting 10 subscriptions of Scholastic News magazine and 10 subscriptions of TIME For Kids magazine to help improve literacy. By receiving the materials that I am requesting, we will be able to enhance our guided reading experience. Students build their everyday vocabulary by experiencing nonfiction text. These classroom magazines provide real world information in the form of 'fun' text that students will enjoy reading. During guided reading time, I sit with a small group of students for 30 minutes to read and discuss a book or article with them. Every student cycles through guided reading once a week. During this small-group time, students will read the articles and complete the comprehension activities with me. This time is excellent for more individualized instruction and these classroom magazines allow us to discuss real world and current events. By laminating the articles, they are also great materials that I can continue to use with classes for the next few years to come.
By providing students with high quality reading experiences, they will increase their literacy skills.
This is extremely important for my students since they will be leaving the nurturing walls of an elementary school this year to move up to middle school. I am always looking for ways to get students interested and excited about reading, which will be a lifelong learning skill.
