Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Do you remember what it was like the first time you started high school? My students need to be well prepared for the upper grades. They need to have exposure to nonfiction texts to be able to understand the complexity of these texts.
My students range from Hispanic to African American descent.
They are extremely inquisitive and curious. However, they come from very low income families and are limited in resources. They attend one of the oldest public schools in a challenging neighborhood. About 10% of the class are English language learners.
My Project
My students will be able to observe, record, demonstrate, and experience real world events with these magazines. These materials will help create a classroom environment where the real world is meaningful to my students. These resources will make learning more relevant for my students. They will study text structures which differ greatly from narrative texts. They will analyze, critique, and develop questions based on magazine articles. My students need Scholastic News and TIME for Kids.
Through inquiry, students learn to build on their existing knowledge of a topic.
Yet, in order to further explore these topics, students need nonfiction resources they can refer to in the classroom. These age appropriate magazines help them discover more about the real world they live in.
