This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
We live in a world that is constantly changing. Scholastic News will open this world to our students so they can become critical thinkers who can interact with and change the world around them. It will also expose our students to nonfiction text and features.
Our students attend school in the middle of a major downtown area.
They come from economically and culturally diverse backgrounds. They face many challenges ranging from bringing basic school supplies to the classroom to meeting academic expectations. Our school instills a love of learning in each student and encourages each and every student to aim for higher learning. Many of our students will be the first member of their family to attend college.
My Project
Using these mini newspapers, our students will be able to become better acquainted with the world around them. The newspapers cover current events, national holidays, and various animals and plants. Our students will also gain invaluable exposure to nonfiction features which will help prepare them for upcoming standardized tests. We do not have enough nonfiction texts to fully exposure our students to these skills and features.
Nonfiction text can open up a world that is often closed to our students.
Exposure to the world outside of home and school is crucial to developing the future leaders our students will become. The more exposure our students have, the more they will be able to shape their own viewpoints and opinions. They will finally be able to develop into the unique individuals they are already becoming.
