Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I love the ethnic, socioeconomic, racial & religious diversity in my middle school. Our urban district has 71 languages spoken in students' homes. Approximately, 50% of my students are eligible for free or reduced meals at school. Our school is in a city located in southwestern Connecticut. It’s very close to NYC. I teach 4 sixth grade social studies classes and one advisory class.

My social studies students are passionate about learning history & current events and making the world a better place!

They are critical thinkers and full of questions about the world around them whether it’s past or present. They are interested and fascinated about the ancient civilizations we study while they explore the social, economical and political challenges of today. Regardless of students learning about world, national, state and local news or historical events, my students really flourish when hands-on, multi-sensory activities are used rather than passive learning where the teacher or one student reports while everyone listens. I incorporate a variety of learning strategies to ensure students’ needs are met to promote learning. This can be challenging at times due to lack of financial resources, but I’m creative and dedicated to finding ways.

My Project

Research indicates that a regular dose of current events has a multitude of benefits, even in classes outside of social studies. Students need awareness of global issues as the countries of the world become more interdependent. Today’s students need an understanding of the world’s economy, politics, social structures, and environment in order to make informed decisions through out their lives. Students will learn how to critically read, distinguish between fact, fiction, and plain old opinion; between research or evidence-based statements and empty rhetoric; between exaggeration and reputable journalism – not just “factoids” from Facebook, Twitter, or other information feeds. Thomas Jefferson once said, “If we are to guard against ignorance and remain free, it is the responsibility of every American to be informed.” Children need to become competent life long learners. Therefore, they can use this magazine in class & at home to learn how to use nonfiction materials – current events – to expand their knowledge base, solve problems, and make decisions.
