My Students

I currently work at a campus that has over 85% of our students receiving free or reduced-price lunch. Over half of our students are English Language Learners, which means that English is their second language. We are a campus of just over 600 students. The majority of our students are African American and Hispanic.

Our students are special because at our school we create a community.

Our students come from tough neighborhoods and from fractured homes and families. Despite all of these challenges, our students come to school eager to learn and grow. We strive at our school to grow the entire child: athletics, arts, music, as well as academics.

I am impressed with and inspired by the students that I work with every day. I am proud of their tenacity to want to succeed and their willingness to learn and grow.

My Project

These news readers will help students in second grade read about the world around them! Students tend to not be familiar with the news and current events. These readers will help students explore the important issues of our daily lives. When teachers use these readers with their students, they will be able to have students discuss world events. Students need to understand what is happening in the world around them in order to become better global citizens. If we want students to be contributing citizens, then the time to start is now!

These readers will also help expose students to a wide range of words and vocabulary that is written in child friendly text.

We want students to interact with texts that are written on their level. When students are able to read and discuss with their classmates, this will lead to great discussions about a variety of topics included in the readers. Students will be able to enjoy reading the news and look forward to their next delivery!
