"Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn." -Benjamin Franklin
We are a community of fourth graders, within the School District of Philadelphia, who are very eager to learn.
Our classroom consists of 29 students, a few of which receive special education services, as well as students who are struggling, English-speaking learners. Being an urban school setting, many of my students do not have the resources or tools at home to help reinforce their learning.
My Project
Writing a research paper is often a daunting task for students. By dividing the process up into easy workshop steps, I have found that my students have found it less intimidating.
Something as simple as a printer, will involve all my students and hold them accountable during their research and writing process.
One of the steps of our Writer's Workshop is Research and Investigate. During this phase, students explore student-friendly sites on the Internet to gather evidence and material to include in their writing. Having a printer in the classroom will cut out a lot of wasted time during the research phase. Normally students will gather their evidence they have researched from the Internet, and write facts from their research in their Writer's Notebook. With an HP OfficeJet All-In_One printer and extra toner now my students will be able to simply print their research, and use highlighters to make note of the important parts they will like to cite in their writing.
The last step of our Writer's Workshop is Publishing. By having a printer in the classroom, students will be able to neatly publish their work by printing their final work of art directly from the computer they published it on.
