My school is located in an urban area outside of D.C. Our school serves students in grades pre kindergarten to the second grade. The students in our school community come from a variety of different countries and represent many different cultures. Most of our students receive free or reduced lunch and are English language learners. My first graders are fun loving, inquisitive and love learning! My busy first graders need opportunities to learn in fun and fun and engaging ways that also promote their social and emotional development.
My students need additional exposure to nonfiction texts on topics that are of personal interest to them. Often times kids lean towards reading plenty of fiction stories but nonfiction composes the bulk of what we read as adults. I want to prepare my students for what adult reading will be like while having fun! Having the Scholastic News Magazine will help my students to learn more about the world around them in an interesting and kid friendly format. This format will encourage my students to read more about the world around them! These magazines are also aligned to many important curriculum topics that will enhance our learning time together.
