Extra! Extra! Journalists Emerge on the West Side!
My project needs digital cameras for next year's journalism/newspaper students. We currently do not have any cameras for use on the newspaper.
FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Baum's classroom raised $1,091
This project is fully funded
My grant is for Marshall High School on Chicago's west side. I am an English teacher for all grade levels and teach the only journalism/newspaper elective in the school which is in its third year.
My students all come from low-income backgrounds. I have students of all levels and abilities in this class, but the one thing they have in common is the need to be heard. As a class in the first two weeks of school, they have learned how to work together and already use their natural talent to put their voices into words on paper. They are sincerely excited about the chance to be on the school paper this year.
As part of the newspaper, the students will be encouraged not only to write but to explore the world of photography as well. Each student will get a chance to be a photographer for various news events around the school which will help them strengthen their visual skills to capture a functional newsworthy photo. As of right now, my class does not have any cameras to use for this purpose which puts me in the position again of loaning out my personal camera to one student at a time. Multiple cameras allow them the freedom to use the camera for more than just one night and to snap as many copies as possible to find the perfect picture.
This class has become important to the students at Marshall High School because it gives them the voice they so badly need. Their lives are full of situations in which no one listens to them or hears what they are truly thinking. Today, I would like you to be a part of enriching my students' education by equipping them with a way to explore their creative side through photography. I would like my students to be well-rounded individuals which as journalists means writing as well as taking photos. Thank you.
