Chicago Public School students have many challenges to deal with that often get in the way of their educational career. My inner-city students come from low-income households and participate in the free/reduced lunch program at school. They have countless issues to deal with at home, at school, and in the community. Therefore, school isn't always the top priority for them, so the novels we choose to teach in class are not only of high quality, but of high interest. Given the opportunity to read some really great novels, they can escape into the world of literature while strengthening their comprehension and literacy skills to go on to college.
