Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We are a small neighborhood school and we work together to create a caring supportive environment for all students. I am a special education teacher and work with students who have a range of learning and emotional needs. My students work hard to to stay on track for graduation in spite of often having significant gaps in their background knowledge. Many of them come to high school with skills that are well below grade level. Some of my students are also English language learners.
Everyday my students show me incredible strength, courage, and resilience.
Every child has capabilities, talents, and strengths; sometimes, all it takes is exposure or motivation. I am fortunate to work with these young people. Many of them manage difficulties or responsibilities at home and still show up for school to strive for something more.
These students deserve every opportunity to be successful and to have choices for their futures. They have so much potential and have already navigated so many obstacles, I hope to prepare them to reach their post high school goals, whatever they may be. With support and guidance they can shine.
My Project
Help me give my students 2 GAIM balance ball chairs to allow them to stay seated and engaged. These chairs can increase concentration for the most easily distracted students.
My students need fleece jackets to stay warm both inside and outside of the school.
We have a new building with a high functioning air conditioner so it is often very cold in the classroom. Also many of my students walk to and from school. The school does not allow students to wear hoodies at school, although often this is all they have (or want). Having a supply of jackets will help then stay warm and be in compliance with the dress code.
My students can also use reading guides to help them keep track of their place while they read. These guides help students who struggle with reading to stay focused.
Additional items that we could really use in the classroom are erasers for the white board and a hole punch.
