I teach art to 85 high school students in grades 9 through 12 in New York. The students in our school are refugees who have recently moved to the United States. They have fled war, crushing poverty, or religious persecution. Despite so much adversity in their lives, these young adults arrive to school every day eager to learn. They are avid and enthusiastic learners who dream of being successful but have several issues hindering their progress. One hundred percent of our students are ELL's. A large portion of the students enrolled are labeled as SIFE. This means they have missed multiple years of education in their own home countries. Having a deficiency in literacy in their own language as well as learning a new language can be stressful for them.
My Project
We have recently acquired seating, drawing books, graphic novels, and art biographies to create a cozy reading and drawing nook in our art room.
Our imaginations can't wait to be taken to far off places when we read our new books!
We are also incredibly excited to create amazing artworks in our new space.
To make our nook even cozier, we would love to have 2 throw pillows and pillow cases to put in the chairs that I will bring from home.
I would like to add two extra graphic novels to our library that the students will read in English class next year. The graphic novels have pictures, and will introduce them to the characters, themes, and vocabulary they will study when they read the actual novel.
I am also trying to create an air of ambiance to fuel our creative minds. I would love to recreate the floating candle scene from the Great Hall in Harry Potter. I would need the LED battery powered candles and craft rolls to create floating candles that will be hung with fishing line from the ceiling---right above the students' heads!
