Extemporaneous Speaking Needs Resources

My students need materials to compete in National and International Extemporaneous competitive speech: file folders, hanging files, and legal pads.

My Students

My students are competing against better funded private and suburban public schools. They need basic, physical materials for to stand a chance.

My students are largely either immigrants or the children of immigrants.

They already face serious difficulties competing against native English-speaking, better funded, larger speech teams. The items listed here will give them the barest necessities to compete on something approaching an equal playing field.

My Project

Students have to highlight news articles. We scraped together enough money for magazine subscriptions, but right now their articles are all jumbled together. They only have 30 minutes to write a current events-related speech using highlighted articles, and every second they waste looking for an article is a second less they have to read, analyze, synthesize, organize, and memorize. Better box organization will help them do better.

I competed for Washington's Speech and Debate team 11 years ago.

We were never adequately funded, but we at least had a functioning box. I highlighted as much as I could competing by myself, but my Extemp box was still largely empty. We now have more students doing more highlighting, but not the physical storage. This project allows my students to be the best they can.
