My Students
I am a mental health counselor working in West Baltimore. I provide intensive mental health services to children ages 5-12 in a Child's Psychiatric Day Program in need of intensive treatment for failure to thrive in the classroom and/or community. The students who come to the Partial Day Program come referred by their school or current outpatient mental health provider for a higher level of care.
The Child's Partial Hospitalization Empowerment Program emphasizes improving one's well-being.
The children that come to the program receive schooling, individual therapy, group therapy, and family therapy. I assist my students' emotional, behavioral, and social challenges that compromise their ability to succeed academically.
Every day, I work to alleviate behavioral or emotional concerns.
Behaviors cited most frequently include students who:
-have poor self-image, make negative self-statements
-have low self-confidence, avoid the difficult
-are depressed, unhappy
My Project
Drawing and painting can have healing and therapeutic effects for children. These calming methods of working through emotions and expressing oneself can help to understand certain things that talk therapy cannot articulate.
Art therapy allows for creative expression that can overcome the limitations of language.
If an idea or emotion is too difficult, confusing, or painful to be said or written, drawing, painting, or coloring can surpass the stumbling block of language. It can potentially help improve cognition and sensory-motor function, social skills, and anger.
The resources that I want to use with my kids will allow them to open up about difficult situations. The easels will be used to support the canvases. The paint will be utilized to draw on the canvases or on the finger paint pads. Finger paint is a great textile therapy that allows kids to be themselves. The aprons will be used to protect the student's clothing. The sand bottles will be used as a different form of therapy. The sand will be a soothing mechanism for the kids. Once they are done playing with the sand, they can create their own bottle, take it home, and use it as a visual relaxation coping skill.
