Expressing Through Art: Supporting Immigrant and English Learners' Growth
Help me give my students art supplies like modeling clay, drawing paper, and storage solutions to help them express their emotions, and ease their transition through art therapy since many of whom are immigrating to a new country,
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My students are a diverse group of immigrants and English learners who are adjusting to life in a new country. Many of them face language barriers and emotional challenges as they navigate their new environment. Through this project, I aim to provide them with creative tools to express themselves, build confidence, and foster a sense of belonging.
The specific items I’m requesting—modeling clay, paints, brushes, and sketch pads—will offer my students a way to communicate non-verbally.
These resources will help them tap into their creativity, allowing them to process their emotions while developing fine motor skills and problem-solving abilities. The rolling pins and storage shelves will create a more organized, functional art space, ensuring all supplies are accessible and ready to use.
My goal is to give students a creative outlet to express their feelings and experiences, especially when words might be difficult. This project will also integrate art with language learning by encouraging students to talk about their artwork, boosting their communication and public speaking skills in a supportive environment.
What makes my students extraordinary is their resilience and adaptability. Many of them are balancing the complexities of learning English, adjusting to new surroundings, and finding their place in a new community. Despite these challenges, they bring incredible creativity and determination to the classroom. Art gives them a safe, expressive outlet to share their unique perspectives and to connect with one another. Your support will help them thrive both academically and personally.
