My Students

Middle school can be tough. Everyone remembers the social awkwardness and growing academic expectations during these few years.

My students, in addition to the growing pains of middle school, are also navigating a new language and culture.

My students are English Language Learners from around the world, with seven different languages and over twelve different countries represented in our classes. They face their challenges with enthusiasm, curiosity and hard-work. They are eager to learn and share their stories. As a class, we focus on projects that promote critical thinking and student voice, doing projects from classroom recipes, visiting local farms and creating our own bilingual poetry.

My Project

Creating art in class is important for so many reasons: it teaches creativity and responsibility, and cooperation with other students. In addition, it's a fantastic way to let our English Language Learner's demonstrate their academic knowledge in a unique and exciting way.

These colorful paints and markers will make my middle school students smile!

The markers and pencils will be used throughout the year to create drawings and posters to highlight the learning in our classroom. The masks and paint will be used as an end of quarter project, wrapping up our literacy unit on identity. After reading Paul Laurence Dunbar's "We Wear the Mask" and Jason Reynolds' "Ghost," students will create their own masks to explore identity while also learning about art, history, and culture.
