This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach sixth, seventh, and eighth graders at a magnet middle school that has a mix of magnet and zoned students. I teach technology elective classes that focus on media and design. The majority of my students are from low-income households and from very diverse backgrounds.
My students love technology and being creative.
However, many of these students do not have access to technology outside of school. I try to make opportunities for my students to create projects based on real-world careers in technology and media.
My Project
My students are still processing the traumas experienced over the last two years. Through open dialog and creative projects, I have been encouraging them to share what they are feeling. One way I would like my students to express themselves is through creating a classroom quilt. This project will support students in this time of need, as well as reinforce their understanding of ELA standards, including, L.7.3a. Choose language that expresses ideas precisely and concisely. The sewing machine, fabric and quilting supplies will be used so students can design, create and reflect on a portion of our class quilt that represents their experience during COVID. By binding the pieces of the quilt together, I am hoping that my students and I can also work towards healing.
