Expressing Emotions Through Art in Our Mindful Moment Room
Help me give my students resources to enhance our Mindful Moment Room. The paper and the printer will be used to help students express themselves in creative ways, print their writings, and let me print words of encouragement.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach in an urban high school where economic constraints hinder their learning. We are lacking many materials needed to help them succeed in the English classroom. The district offers free breakfast and free lunch to our students. Many of the students read below grade level and this can impact their motivation in class.
My students face a lot of adversity both in and out of the classroom which leads to issues academically and socially.
Many of our disengaged students are chronically absent or tardy, meaning students are missing 10 percent or greater of the total number of days during the school year including excused, unexcused, out-of-school suspensions, and in-school suspensions.
They are hardworking and eager to learn. They need tools that will help make them college and career ready once they leave these halls. My students are creative, humorous and diverse and they deserve a chance to learn.
My Project
We have created a Mindful Moment Room for students to be able to take a 10 minute break during the school day if they are feeling overwhelmed, anxious or agitated. We have set up stations where students can relax and find a sense of calmness and art is one of the many methods we have in place.
Creative expression used in conjunction with Restorative Practices will help students grieve, heal, relieve stress and repair damaged relationships.
These resources will be beneficial for our students in many ways. They will be able to print pieces they have typed and written, they will be able to print words of encouragement and we as staff will be able to print necessary documents for administrative purposes.
