My Students

Help give my students a place to express themselves and continue their love for writing!

The students you will be donating to are a very special bunch.

I am currently teaching a self contained special education class (12:1:1). This means the students in my class have cognitive, emotional, social and physical delays. Their disabilities range from speech and language impaired, autism, health impairments, emotionally disturbed and learning disabled. They are very energetic and very busy which is why we are known as the "busy bees". My students inspire me everyday because even though they have cognitive or health impairments they are still full of life and have beautiful and joyful spirits.

My Project

When my students first came to me at the beginning of last year many of them were reluctant to write. I found they loved to draw and scribble however when it came to write they were reluctant. I went to training on writing last year and the idea of journals was suggested to try in our classroom to foster development. When I introduced the journals to them and explained they could write about whatever they wanted and it was their own personal place to hold their thoughts, something changed in them. They loved that this journal belonged to them and they enjoyed writing. They began looking forward to journal time and were often upset when it was time to put them away. They were having so much fun they forgot they were taking part in the writing process. I am also requesting blank books so that my students may "publish" a book and experience what it is like to be an author and experience the process of creating a book.

I would love for my students to start the year off with journals and continue with that love for writing they had developed last year.

I would also love for my students to have the opportunity to "publish" a book and share it with the school and their classmates during a publishing party. With your help you will give my students the materials they need to learn, grow and maybe even become an author!
