I teach at a school where majority of the students are Hispanic. 96% of the students are Hispanic. 97% of the students receive Free & Reduced lunch. 72% of the students receive ESOL services. Many of the students speak other languages and also have an ESOL teacher who comes in and works with them.
Majority of my students are below grade level.
Although they are below grade level, they are very eager to learn. My students are very hands-on and enjoy collaborative learning. The students love learning in groups and working with their peers.
An area that my students are weak in is writing. My students are Hispanic and many of them cannot write full complete sentences. Writing is very important in 2nd grade because it is helping them to prepare for the writing they will have to do in 3rd grade on the state standardized test.
This semester I would like to incorporate more writing into my literacy centers.
The notebooks and printer will benefit my students in many ways. With the notebooks, I will be able to use them as writing notebooks with my students to implement a weekly Writer's Workshop. With the printer, I will be able to print out different resources that go inside their notebooks for them to use as references to become better writers. These notebooks will be able to go to 3rd grade with the students to use as references when they are writing throughout the year. The more writing they do, the more confident they will become in their writing.
