This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
When students grow and learn through art, they feel empowered and confident. However, others feel like they are just not able to create art. I want these students to have another way to express and produce art. I want to introduce them to a world of art through technology and graphic design.
I work at a high-poverty, high crime community where all students receive free breakfast and lunch everyday because most families cannot afford to provide this for them.
We are a school of about 1,400 students. I am the art teacher for all of them, whether it is from direct instruction throughout the day or as part of an Art Club after school. These students crave art. However, as we know, children learn in many ways. Some children blossom by doing drawing and painting. Others hate art because they feel they are not "good" enough. I want to expose those students, as well as all my art students, to other areas of art. I want them to see that they can practice, develop a passion, go to college or trade school, and have a career in the arts.
My Project
Because my school is a PC school, graphic design and creating other media based art is more difficult. By having an Apple computer and scanners/color printers in the classroom, my students will be able to create graphics, create multimedia art, and document their own art my digitizing it. Most of my students don't have a scanner or printer at home let alone a computer. Although my students do have access to some computers at our school, they have not worked on an Apple here at school and most, if not all, have ever worked on photo editing software. I love Pablo Picasso's quote,
"Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up." Pablo Picasso
I think this is so true. If children are not exposed to different media of art, they think they are not good at it. I believe everyone has some artist talent, they just need to be exposed to it so they can see for themselves how talented they are.
I want to reach more students by expanding my art classes and Art Club by introducing other areas of the arts such as technology and multimedia art projects.
I would like to eventually add in photography and movie making into the classes and the Apple computer and scanner will also help us accomplish this as well.
