We use whiteboards everyday! The students enjoy independent practice of their sight words when it is with markers and their own whiteboards. We also use the boards during whole group lessons and during math as 'risk boards' to encourage display of mathematical thinking and student involvement.
We are a first grade class of 21 friendly and diverse learners.
Some of our friends are English Language Learners and we love to learn what items in our classroom are called in various languages and challenge ourselves to use such words daily. I have met my class for 8 days now and we are off to a fantastic start. They are eager to become readers!
My Project
I've requested individual student whiteboards (my set is so old they barely come clean), cleaner and a pack of colorful markers for each student. Upon entry in the classroom in the mornings, students immediately get out their boards and begin practicing their list of sight words. Having various colors will allow me to inject a teaching point such as: "write all your vowels in green today." They then bring their boards to the carpet for whole group learning activities and we also use the boards during math as 'risk pads'. Not only are we 'being green' but the boards create an excitement and a higher level of student involvement that is different than paper and pencil. They also play a large role in my ability to informally assess students throughout a lesson. For example, if I am teaching grammar, I would say "everyone write an adjective on your board and hold it up." Then I could quickly assess and proceed with teaching through their responses. They make learning fun!
I would be honored to provide my students with the opportunity to experience how valuable their education is and that they are supported by people they have never met but that are cheering for their success in school.
