Expo Exploration: Solving Math Our Way

My students need Expo markers to use during our "think time". Students brainstorm mathematical strategies to solve problems using mini whiteboards and then explain their thinking to their classmates.

My Students

A majority of my third grade students have always lived in the Pass Christian area located on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Therefore, they have experienced much of their learning outside using tactile, hands on methods. They are always seeking new ways to learn and apply their previous knowledge.

These students have experienced triumphs and failures already in life, and each time they leave the situation that much more ready to conquer their life purpose.

I truly believe these children will impact society in wonderful ways as they continue to grow.

My Project

My goal for my students is for them to understand that mathematical equations can be solved using various strategies. They will use the Expo markers to record their strategies on their mini whiteboards before sharing with their classmates. This is their favorite part of my class. They love to critique the thinking of others and provide valuable feedback leading to phenomenal communication skills.

The Expo markers will spark student thinking and the chart paper will allow student strategies to be recorded for later reference.

Anchor and reference charts are critical in our everyday routine. Students use them continuously especially when explaining their reasoning. They truly help them understand the concept from multiple points of view.
