"The purpose of art is washing the dust of daily life off our souls." -Pablo Picasso.
The classroom of today is filled with math, reading, data, quizzes, and test. Students need a way to express their artistic side. They need to be able to explore that artist inside them.
My students are future writers, mathematicians and scientist.
I am very big in the new STEM model of education. Students need to experience learning through hands-on projects which I try to bring to my classroom. My students are excited learners and are willing to try to improve themselves. Many of students really enjoy art, yet I want to reach those students who either don't like art (because they can't do it), or think art is okay. These are the students who need to experience art through different mediums with different artists as their guides.
My Project
I have been reading a book called "Wings of Fire". I thought this would be a great way to introduce blending of colors with my students. I found a lesson that shows students how to draw a dragon's eye. The characters in this book are very colorful creatures. The chalk will give the students a chance to let the students create blends of colors and create depth on the scales. Students will also be able to learn about colors using dying techniques creating a quilt squares. For a finally project of color, I want the students to create a mask representing themselves, but also using art techniques they have learned in class.
These art supplies will be used in many art lessons in my classroom for many years.
I have set aside a large amount of time for my students to do art. I want my students to dust off their daily routine and start being creative, imaginative and fun fun while they explore color.
