This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I am a teacher at a small charter school in Newark, New Jersey. We have approximately 120 students from Newark. Part of our mission is to provide our students with the tools to grow into successful leaders, meaningful contributors to society, and informed decision-makers through encouraging their personal growth and intellectual curiosity through inquiries. This year we are piloting an honors program with some of our older students. The idea is that we will offer multiple programs of study and each student in the program will pick which topic they would like to explore for the year.
As part of this program, one of the courses I designed is called, "Women in STEAM" which explores the stories of five incredible women in the field of Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts, or Mathematics.
While my course is geared more towards inspiring my female students, the class is open to all in the program.
My Project
I am seeking funds to buy the books I would like the students to read as part of this course. Students will be reading the various books, submitting projects on each featured woman, and then creating their own project on a lesser known woman in a STEAM field.
Specifically, we will explore women such as Temple Grandin (Science), Marissa Mayer (Technology), Hedy Lamarr (Engineering), Zaha Hadid (Art), and Katherine Johnson (Math).
Students will also explore their own example of a woman in STEAM. Please consider contributing to help me educate my students on the impact women have had in STEAM.
