Exploring Virtual Reality App Creation in STEAM 7.0!
My students need one Apple iPod Touch 6th generation device in order to use and develop virtual reality apps and experiences that integrate the fine arts and sciences together!
Our school strives to provide real world opportunities with STEM and STEAM based instruction. With over 70% of our population coming from poverty, these opportunities allow our students to develop skills and talents which allow them to connect the material which they are learning to real world applicable jobs.
With an emphasis on STEAM based education, my students integrate the engineering design process in the use and creation of real world applicable items and software that allows them to prepare for in demand careers of the future!
6th, 7th, and 8th grade students involved in both my content and exploratory classes have the opportunity to develop these important skills.
My Project
One of the projects that students work on here is using virtual reality headsets in order to develop apps, create immersive STEM and STEAM based learning experiences, and use virtual reality apps in order to learn material in new and creative ways. My students developed this project idea after realizing that our school had a lack of handheld, mobile technology in order to use our virtual reality headsets effectively for this purpose.
With your help we hope to create a mobile virtual reality lab that can be transported to any classroom in order for students to explore and enhance their learning in new ways!
After researching what types of devices would work best for our virtual reality headsets in viewing and creating content, my students came to the conclusion to use Apple iPods. Their choice will allow them to create virtual reality photo experiences, virtual reality video experiences, and augmented reality learning experiences.
We are continuing to work toward the end goal of one to one technology integration with a class set of virtual reality devices! The expansion of this program will allow more teachers to be involved with the use of the mobile virtual reality lab, effectively exposing students more frequently to its application in a variety of subject areas.
