Exploring Utah: Seeing Our Great State!

Help me give my students the opportunity through our great state while staying comfortably, safely, and calmly in the classroom. This includes Google VR headsets, fidget cushions, wobble cushions, and other items.

My Students

My school district is absolutely committed to student learning. I am proud of the fact that we've kept schools open for much of the pandemic and have met many non-academic needs in our community. And yet COVID-19 continues to have serious effects on my students personally, which prevent some of them from achieving academically.

My Utah Studies students are hungry to travel beyond their local communities and to start taking their places as thoughtful, more independent young adults.

In 7th grade, my job as a teacher is to feed their curiosity and interest and help them build the skills they will need in high school. It can sometimes be a tough balance, yet I love the challenge.

This year, my students are more disillusioned and sad than ever. The pandemic has shattered their sense of safety and, for a large number of my students, their sense of security as well. A huge part of my job this year is just encouraging students to "be here now"--to mindfully choose to let go of the things they cannot control and bring their best to the things they can. My dear students need more from me than ever.

My Project

My students' have had fewer opportunities to travel within Utah, both with their families and on school-sponsored field trips, because of the disruptions of COVID-19. As a Utah Studies teacher, I want my students to appreciate the towering vistas of our Rocky Mountains, the red mesas of the Colorado Plateau, and the harsh beauty of the Great Basin. With VR goggles, I will be able to bring them to all 5 of our national parks, to Native American ruins, to our Capitol building, to the Great Salt Lake, and more.

Stress, food insecurity, inexperience in middle school settings, grief, and fear all shape my students' abilities to work successfully in my classroom.

I am requesting materials to make my classroom a calming place where students can feel safe. I have a large number of students who have a hard time staying focused and non-disruptive, so I am requesting items to make calm down packs that might help them stay in class and on task. Only then can I help them grow in the reading, writing, and thinking skills they need to master before high school.
