6th grade is a difficult transition year at our school. Students are coming from a very creative, hands-on, group-based elementary program to a computer-assisted, problem-based, individualized secondary program. I want to help the students bridge the gap between the two styles of learning. Most of the materials I'm requesting will give students more options to demonstrate their learning, beyond just submitting a doc on the computer. They will be able to try visual brainstorming and artistic responses to new content; read hard copies of books instead of Kindle versions; create paper-based projects and display them on the walls; share music with the class instead of isolating themselves with headphones; handwrite stories instead of typing them; and so on. The cushions will enable me to gather groups of students comfortably on the floor for discussions rather than relying on online chats and surveys. The dry erase rolls and markers will allow students to confer with peers in different classes. The dice and rubber chicken will be fun ways to elicit live student participation. In the end, the strengths of both systems of education--the elementary model and the secondary model--will be highlighted, and the transition to middle school will be easier and more successful for the students.
