My Students

My school is a small school with only one to two classes per grade level. My 7th grade homeroom students will spend 3 hours in our room every day and my other classes of 7th and 8th grade will be with me for 90 minutes! This means my Literature classroom will be a home away from home for students. I want to be sure the room is comfortable, colorful and welcoming to each of the diverse individuals coming in every day.

My Project

7th and 8th graders have learned the procedures for book clubs and have had a few experiences using both mentor texts and book club readings to explore our shared themes and essential questions. In 4th quarter, we'd like to give them the opportunity to explore classic texts like To Kill a Mockingbird and Warriors Don't Cry as a class to start before jumping off into book clubs focused on similar themes and questions.

As 8th grade students read, they will annotate their books using post-its and make connections between themes in Warriors Don't Cry and books like Dear Martin or The Hate U Give.

Similarly, 7th grade students will complicate their reading and understanding of To Kill a Mockingbird through poetry, non-fiction, short story and realistic fiction stories today that deal with themes of innocence and justice.
