My students need to learn about the world; the many countries, cultures and species that inhabit this planet. Reading Time for Kids, Scholastic News, Storyworks and Storyworks Junior provides them with this opportunity.
I am very lucky to have such a wonderful group of students who come from many different backgrounds. We are located in an urban setting in Boston where 100% of these children receive free breakfast and lunch. These special needs students walk into our classroom every day full of life and ready to learn. They don't let their disabilities get in the way of them achieving success.
Many of my students have very limited schooling in their own language and are now thrust into a formal school setting where they move from learning letters to reading very quickly.
Many of my students come from many different and often difficult situations. The class family that we create is vital to the children feeling safe, loved and able to learn.
My Project
Time for Kids and Scholastic News bring the world into my classroom. Both provide digital and print opportunities for my students to engage in world issues and concerns. This helps them to learn how to use discourse in discussing various topics and also provides them rich material which can be used to teach writing skills such as opinion writing and reports.
My students are on various reading levels, but the Storyworks and Storyworks Junior magazines are so engaging that all the students want to learn and discover the world regardless of their individual reading level.
All four magazines are another wonderful resource that allows all skill levels access to complex subjects and information.
