My students need an HD TV and stand to experience a world view. They have limited or no experiences outside of their community. Visiting the world by watching virtual field trips would provide this learning experience.

My Students
My awesome, first-grade students are eager to learn as we discover, explore, and investigate the world! "Exploring the World" with a flat, screen HD TV would enhance learning. I teach in a Title I, highly impoverished school with 95% of our students are on free or reduced price meals. They use technologies such as laptops to learn. Approximately 40% in my class are English Language Learners. They experience difficulty in speaking because their vocabulary is limited. They use what they hear, and their answers are brief, one or two word sentences. Learners need lots of experiences with visual and spoken language.
This grant would help in language acquisition and important reading readiness skills.
L. Wittgenstein said, "The limits of my language means the limits of my world."
Our school is on an Extended Day program, which is determined by our state's evaluation of reading, with our data showing our students' achievement in the 20th percentile. I want my students to have unlimited language, as they explore infinite worlds through the use of a HD television, since we have no TV in the class.
My Project
Daily, we will have a myriad of opportunities to discover the world through the sights and sounds of far off places utilizing technology. The TV will allow us to visit sites integrated in lessons aligned to our curriculum/state's standards, and increase achievement.
Virtual trips allow learning through a variety of modalities: initially visual and auditory learners will encounter new world experiences; then continue learning through hands-on and cooperative learning.
Lessons will include people, places, culture, and the community. These virtual trips will include the curriculum areas of science, the environment, social studies, literacy and writing, music, the arts, and math. English language learners will have significant exposure to people where they can hear the language, and then experiment with peers with newly acquired vocabulary, in using the language.
We recently experienced the destructive hurricane, and have been affected with two weeks without school. In order for my students to meet their learning goals, we will need to enrich learning with targeted skills focused on individualized instruction.
