Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our first graders are curious about the world around them. We teach them about the weather, light and sound, animal adaptations, U.S. symbols and many other topics, but they still want to know more. They are particularly curious about current events and the things that they see on television and on the internet.
We love their inquisitive nature and want to encourage our students to think critically about their world outside of school.
This world is a fast-paced and constantly changing place and it can be difficult to keep up with world events, especially at age six. Now, more than ever, we need to help our students become good global citizens and understand how they can impact the world for better.
My Project
Our students want to know as much as possible about their world. We have lots of materials to help them understand the things that are constant, but we need help in finding ways to teach them about current events. The articles written in Time for Kids and Scholastic News are high quality and appropriately leveled for our students. They tie in perfectly with our social studies and science standards.
These magazines will drive our students to have rich conversations, ask thoughtful questions and see things that they have never seen before.
Our science and social studies resources are not as richly developed as our language arts and math resources, so we often look for ways to supplement our teaching. These magazines will be a perfect complement to our instruction and help to bring these topics to life for our students. We are excited to become great citizens of the world!
