My Students

Our local Iñupiaq people, which translates to the “real people,” have been here for about 4,000 years. Today, our village embraces many other cultural groups including Samoan, Tongan, Caucasian, Black, Hispanic, Filipino, and other Alaska Natives.

My students are seeking ways to explore an exciting new world through reading.

Finding adventure and excitement to develop a life-long love of learning is important in middle school.

Assisting these youth to improve their reading skills and take ownership of their educational opportunities is essential in directing the path that their lives take. This begins with a wide range of reading options. Opportunities to choose what appeals to their tastes is key to encouraging continued improvement in their reading development.

My Project

This project is to help build a classroom library. I'm working to bring current and classic books to help expand their understanding of the world around them. Most of the current influence they receive is from the media. This book project allows more of an influence from literature and personal discussion.

The students will be able to choose books, which will help them continue to enjoy independent reading time.

With these new books, my students will be able to choose from a variety of books that will allow them to read independently at their individual reading level.

They will also be able to choose books that interest them. The best way to increase reading ability is to read more, and these books will continue to help my students become stronger readers. Books possess the magical path that takes students on an adventure, hooking them on the pleasures to be found through reading. Literature, modern and classic, provides a resource to make it happen, in and out of the classroom.
