This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
This is my first year teaching Social Studies in addition to English Language Arts. One of my goals is to use our Social Studies time to engage students with nonfiction texts, where they can explore current events and delve deeper into understanding the world around us.
By integrating literacy with social studies and global awareness, I hope to ignite my students’ curiosity of the real world.
A subscription to The Week Junior would be a valuable resource in achieving this goal. This magazine is specifically designed for young readers, offering age-appropriate articles on current events, history, science, and culture. Its engaging content not only aligns with Social Studies standards, but it also provides excellent nonfiction texts to support literacy development.
Through features like 'The Big Debate,’ which aligns with our ELA Argumentative Writing unit, students will learn to think critically, form opinions, and discuss topics that matter to them. With this resource, which will be used both for instruction and for an option to read during our weekly school-wide silent reading time, I can encourage my students to become informed, thoughtful, and empathetic citizens who are ready to engage with the world around them.
Along with the magazine subscription, I am requesting a Teachers Pay Teachers gift card to further enhance the Social Studies curriculum with engaging and meaningful resources. Additionally, I would like magazine racks and storage solutions to keep my classroom organized and inviting, ensuring that my class remains a positive learning environment.
