Exploring the World Through Data Acquisition!

My Students

Our middle school students love to explore the world around them! Data surrounds them everywhere they go, and as a STEAM educator, I want to help them explore and understand it. By providing them the tools needed to collect a wide variety of this data (temperature, altitude, humidity, light level, decibel, motion among others) students will then learn to analyze and make sense of this data in order to better understand the world they live in! Furthermore, collecting, analyzing and understanding data is a vital skill that will serve them through high school, college and beyond.

My Project

Help my students better understand the world around them by helping them analyze and understand the sea of data that surrounds them!

Let's face it, we have become a data driven society.

Jobs and careers that my 7th and 8th grade students today will be exposed to in the next decade will increasingly rely upon analyzing and using large data sets. Help me better prepare them for these future opportunities by giving them a tool to help collect data for them to learn to analyze and see important patterns and relationships. The Databot is a simple to use cube that has the ability to collect a wide variety of data, from temperature to humidity and beyond.

By giving students data sets of data that they have collected, they will be engaged in wanting to explore those sets through the creation of graphical representations that will help them understand what is happening with the environment they are sensing. This small sensor package will open up a world they live in, but rarely pay much attention too!
