Exploring the World of Computer Science

My students need Samsung Galaxy Tablets to create their own Android Apps.

My Students

My students come from a wide range of ethnic backgrounds and live in a very diverse community. Almost 80% of our student population receive free/reduced lunch. Our school is located in a rural area and some students travel long distances to arrive on our campus.

What makes my students special is their desire and willingness to learn and better themselves.

When given opportunities for new learning, they are willing to take on the challenge. Exposing students to new and different content will broaden their college and career options and give them greater choices for their future.

My Project

This coming year (2016-2017) I will be offering our school's first Computer Science Class. The goal of the course is to introduce students to programming and expose them to the diverse options available in the field of computer science. This much needed yet often overlooked content area will allow students to explore various careers available in today's world.

The class will require students to problem solve and develop creative solutions to real problems.

The Android Tablets will allow students to create their own apps as a way of engaging them in the field and sparking their interest to learn more. This year's pilot class will serve as the basis for the development of a computer science program at our school.
