This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My first-grade students are excited to be learning together at a distance this fall. They love sharing about their families, their hobbies, and their hopes and dreams. They are silly and playful and anxious to connect with each other in our zoom classes each day.

First graders are full of enthusiasm for learning, curious about the world around them, and eager to share their observations and stories from their lives.

We are able to share our ideas orally in our live classes and students also record their voices on the assignments that they submit each day on our digital learning platforms. Now they are ready to start writing at home, strengthening their physical fine motor skills through handwriting practice, and expressing their ideas through drawing, labeling, and writing stories.

The majority of students in my class come from low-income backgrounds. Many of their parents are essential workers outside the home and their online learning is being supervised by grandparents, aunties and uncles, and older siblings. This makes having physical materials available to them at home even more important for their development and learning.

My Project

Our youngest learners have become experts at navigating digital resources and learning to connect with their classmates while learning at a distance. This project will address their need for physical connections to their learning materials and will support them in exploring writing offline like we used to do when we were together in our classroom!

Each student will receive materials to strengthen and refine their fine motor skills, daily handwriting practice materials, and writing materials to express their ideas and tell their stories.

These materials will be delivered to their homes so that they can write from their couches and their kitchen tables and the corners that they have carved out for learning.

Students will receive instruction on how to use the materials while we are together in our zoom classes. They will then have an opportunity to turn off their computers and to write and create from home. Finally, they will log back in to take a picture of their work to share with their teacher and classmates.
