This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Energy is ubiquitous in chemistry, but how can my students understand it and the electromagnetic spectrum in a more concrete way? They can accomplish this with a spectrophotometer, of course! This will allow my students to explore first-hand how colors of visible light reflect or absorb other colors of the rainbow.
Our high school is a selective enrollment math and science academy located in a rough neighborhood, but my students travel from all over the South Side to come here.
My students are 71% African American and 25% Hispanic and over 69% are eligible for free or reduced price lunch. They are driven and motivated; they like to explore scientific concepts and to challenge themselves in every way possible.
My Project
Everyone loves colors, but why do they appear different and what does that have to do with energy? My students will use this spectrophotometer to explore the electromagnetic spectrum, particularly the visible range that comprises the rainbow we all know and love. They will begin by testing the limits of their own color vision. Then they will be asked to synthesize a variety of pigments and use the spectrophotometer to determine what wavelengths of light are reflected or absorbed by the different colors they see.
My students encounter light and color every day, but they lack an understanding of the scientific principles behind these phenomena.
This spectrophotometer will enable my students to scientifically explore the rainbow in chemistry!
