My Students

I teach fifth grade reading, writing and language arts at an urban charter school in a large city in the south. My students are bright, curious, and excited to learn. They show up every day ready to dig into new ideas and to expand their thinking. They enjoy exploring important social topics, examining significant historical events and imagining themselves on incredible adventures. My students are diverse. They come from many different cultures, backgrounds and types of families, and truly enjoy learning about the customs and values of others. They are loyal to one another, and value the school community they are part of.

My Project

A classroom set of the book Pink and Say will allow each student to have their own copy of to refer to as we study the text. This dynamic book allows us to cover many of our reading standards including dialect, plot, theme, figurative language, point of view, inferences, and comparing and contrasting characters and settings. Its themes of friendship, acceptance and courage are inspiring and help students grow as members of their school community.

Students can dig deeper and understand better when they have their own copy of a book in their hands.

This allows them to work at their own pace and explore their own ideas without having to wait their turn for the book. A class set not only benefits my current students, but will also provide the same opportunity for classes in the future.
