My Project

The students in our classrooms are hungry for experimentation and exploration. STEM brings a sense of exploration like no other and gives my students opportunities to work with their hands. Making connections to STEM and the world of work will help them discover fields they may want to pursue professionally.

Our 5th-grade students are in need of STEM materials to explore the career of a horticulturalist and to demonstrate their learning.

These include materials for traditional gardening, hydroponics kits so students can discover what it takes to grow a plant without soil, and display boards for students to present their learning at a student-led science fair at our school. These materials will be shared by our five, 5th grade classrooms; and the success and knowledge gained will be shared with peers, younger students, and teachers too.

Students will learn what a Horticulturalist does, understand the factors that affect the growth of certain plants, be able to determine the best regions for seeds to grow and thrive, compare doing this job to what they like to do, and evaluate if this is a job I might like.

With these supplies, my hope is that our students get to see there is more to science, technology, engineering and mathematics than what they will ever learn from a book or handout.
