Exploring STEAM with Pottery!

Help me give my students a chance to explore STEAM with a new pottery wheel!

My Project

Students will apply physics, math, engineering and technology concepts to the visual arts courses by creating wheel thrown pottery. The overall goal is to become proficient in operating the wheel, which involves mastering techniques such as centering, pulling, shaping and trimming clay. One of the primary objectives is to create symmetrical and uniform ceramic forms. The rotating motion of the wheel allows students to shape clay evenly, ensuring the final piece is well-balanced and aesthetically pleasing. Students will learn the basics and throw a pot, then they will meet with collaborative groups to discuss the inquiry question and make plans to create a second pot.

Once students have mastered the basic wheel throwing skills, they will experiment with various techniques to create unique and innovative forms and shapes.

Next, they will present their collaborative group study findings to answer the question: How can I establish a consistent throwing routine, including clay preparation, wheel speed, and hand movements, to minimize confounding variables? Lastly, they will fire, glaze and refire their pots and write a piece comparison and reflective statement about how they used physics concepts to improve their wheel thrown pots.

We are inspired to write this grant because the Ceramics and 3D Design courses have grown in number. Our students learn through experience about how physics, engineering and math are applied to the visual arts every day. Unfortunately, we only have a few wheels in the class, one for the teacher to demonstrate on, and one for students to use. This makes it difficult to teach the basics and keep

students engaged in class. With the funds provided from this grant, the sculpture teachers will purchase and use another pottery wheel to engage more students in learning that will provide hands-on experiences!
