Exploring Social Issues Through Literature

My Project

We start our 8th grade reading year off with social issue book clubs. During this unit, students learn about different issues faced by many people through research and informational texts. They are then able to read stories through the eyes of characters who are dealing with these issues first hand. This text set allows students to become educated, empathetic, and aware of a number of social issues. In addition, so many students are able to see themselves and struggles they might be facing in the different books that we read.

These books will give my students a variety of social issue topics to choose from for their book clubs.

Each title listed below deals with a unique social issue that will help to educate, inform, and influence my students. Examples of topics these books cover are: racism, sexual harassment, mental illness, poverty, identity, and LGBTQ+.
