Do you remember sitting in math class and doing page after page of math problems? Well I do, so I teach using math using the workshop approach. This allows my students to practice their math skills with hands-on materials that are right at their ability level.
My 21 second grade students come to our Title 1 school everyday eager to learn.
They can't wait to participate in whatever activity I have for them. A fourth of my students speak Spanish at home and over half of my class receives free lunch. Because of this they have little opportunity or resources for concept development and enrichment outside of school.
My Project
In my 14 years of teaching I have found that kids learn best when they are relaxed and having fun. I am trying to make math more fun and meaningful for my students, so I teach using the workshop model. I teach a whole class lesson and then the students break up into groups and rotate between 3 stations. At each station they practice the new concept doing an activity right at their level. Teaching this way requires a lot of materials, so I would like to have these materials to help my students have a variety of things while they explore the important world of place value. The pocket chart kit will allow me to teach place value to the whole class while teams of students will have the exact same board in front of them to practice and learn right along with my teaching. The sliders and cards will allow the students to work independently on all of the place value skills they need to master to be successful in math.
Without these activities it will be much less fun for my students to truly master the skills of place value.
Your help with this project will make it possible for my class and other second grade classes in my school to build a firm understanding of these concepts. We would really appreciate having these activities to continue to teach, reinforce and challenge our students in math while they have fun at the same time.
