My students need access to copies of nonfiction books in order to build analysis and group discussion skills as well as provide students exposure to topics and people outside their own personal experiences.
My AP Language and AP Seminar classes are places of spirited discussion, intense analysis, and examination of current events. It is a place where students learn the skills necessary to succeed in the realm of college writing. My students are extremely eager to learn and love to broaden their horizons by reading about people and places outside of their own experience.
The majority of students in my school come from a low-income/high-poverty environment.
Because of this, many of them do not have the resources to provide for basic materials, much less have the money to spend on supplemental books to help expand their learning.
My Project
Students will be using these nonfiction books to explore various contemporary topics in our world. It will also be an outlet to help build communication and collaboration skills as students will be reading these books in small groups. In order for students to have more control over their own learning, having a larger selection of books from which to choose will help them become more engaged and invested in the content. I am hoping that the topics covered in these books will help spark spirited discussion.
The donations to this project will help my students build stronger reading skills, help them discuss difficult and interesting topics in small groups, and also help them hone their collaboration skills.
Not only will this project help reading and communication, it will also give my students stellar examples of professional writing that can then inform and improve their own writing. The use of model texts is a fantastic way to expose students to various forms of writing.
