I teach in a small, Title 1 school in the Missouri Ozarks. Built along the railroad running through the Ozark Mountains, our small town once showed great promise of growth and prosperity. Years ago, our small community was a busy place surrounded by small family farms and mills along the many rivers rolling through the hills. Though our small town has changed over the course of the last century, one thing remains the same; the young people in our community still have big dreams to make a difference in our world. Many of my students dream of one day becoming veterinarians, doctors, and teachers. It is my goal to provide my students with the resources they need to achieve their dreams, just as I have.
My Project
Aside from my collection of biographies, our classroom library only has approximately 20 nonfiction books. Students love nonfiction text! Reading nonfiction books provides students with an opportunity to discover places, animals, things, and ideas from around the world!
In addition to teaching science and social studies concepts, nonfiction books can be the "hook" that gets a child excited about reading.
In order for students to become better readers, they must read. If students find a passion for a certain genre, topic, or series of books they will read!
I am hoping to add books to my classroom library that include concepts related to earth science, physical science, life science, technology, places around the world, careers, and multicultural concepts.
