This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are just learning to love reading and they need access to books of all kinds. While many students enjoy a good story nonfiction books bring their world into the classroom. I want to build a class library that gives every student a way to read amazing books about the world around us.

My students are low-income students in a Southern California school.

They are hard working and love to read from our classroom library. While we live in a big city, many of my students do not have opportunities to visit places outside of their neighborhood. We have worked hard to create a wonderful and wonder-filled school for these children. We have chickens and a native plant garden. We have a science lab and computers lab. Our school is a place where children can grow as learners and members of a larger world. Every year my second grade students love to read nonfiction books. The books we have are well loved. They are interested in the typical topics: sharks, dolphins, bugs, tigers, dogs, space, and volcanoes. In addition, the students have enjoyed reading about foreign countries, first ladies, and how things are made. These young people have a desire to learn and know all they can about the world in which they live.

My Project

My students spend a lot of time reading and writing throughout the school year. During Reader's Workshop students read self-selected books and then during Writer's Workshop they have write using those books as models of what great writing looks like. These nonfiction books would build our class library and allow students to have more choices in what they are going to read about. Students would be able to read about topics that are of interest to them. They would share their learning with their peers. Nonfiction books are so important for students. They give them windows to worlds they are not able to easily visit. They provide a spark that excites and motivates them.

This collection of nonfiction books will build a library that will be used by students for many years.

Students will see the different types of things are in our world. They will be excited about learning.
