This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Children naturally use their senses to explore their environment. Sensory activities differ from other types of play as the emphasis on the senses amplifies the activity. This project and the materials in it (water beads, sensory sand, sensory toys, etc.) will have so many benefits. Many of our current materials have been handed down throughout the years and are in dire need to be replaced.
Research shows that sensory play is a necessary skill builder that helps encourage children to build inquiry, fine motor, and visual discrimination skills.
Sensory play is also inclusive as well as aids in developing and enhancing memory. Play should always allow for children to explore their environment as child-driven learning has lasting effects. Below is a list of objects and there use in our classroom:
Washable Sensory Play Materials (Sensory beads, balls, and noodles) - To engage their sense of touch and provide them with a round sensory experience
Tap Play Color-Changing Light Center - To engage their sense of touch and sight
Kinetic Sensory Sand - To engage fine motor skills and inspire creativity through building
Silly Shapes Sensory Mats - To engage the sense of touch using hands or feet
Foam Sensory Paint - To engage the sense of touch
Calming Cuddle Ball - To provide students with comfort
Squish Squeeze Sensory Beads - To assist students with building their fine motor skills and engaging their sense of touch
Theraputty - To assist students with building their fine motor skills (different firmness has been selected to allow the skills to be advanced)
Watch-It-Roll Calming Tube - To assist students by giving them a focus point to calm down their uncomfortable emotions
Mindful Breathing Board - To assist students with slowing down their breathing when calming down is needed
More than a third of students from low‑income households
