Leaving my 2nd grade classroom for a field trip is a rare but priceless opportunity. Our district only allows for this once per year. So many things are left unexplored by eager minds. With technology budgets small, bringing the world into our elementary school with the internet can difficult as well. Try gathering a classroom full of enthusiastic 7 year olds around a 15" monitor. Projecting computer images for all to see would benefit the children in so many ways. One example that amazes young and old is "google earth". This on-line feature allows one to zoom in on any part of the world from outer space. I have seen web sites that demonstrate concepts that words cannot convey to small children such as a video clip of how the solar system works. I have ideas for such an item to use in math, reading, social studies and science. I want my students to experience the world of discovery that a computer monitor projector could provide. So many opportunities were revealed to me in a summer workshop I attended. Only 10%-20% of students have indicated to me having computers in their home. Without this device such exploration is not possible.
