Exploring Our Heritage: Indigenous People of Alaska and Pacific Northwest
Help me give my students a variety of art supplies to create crafts and engage in Native games that introduce them to the Indigenous Peoples of Alaska and the Pacific Northwest Coast.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
This project is part of a six year series in which students K-8 have the opportunity to explore Native Peoples from all across the United States. This year our students are learning about Indigenous People from Alaska and the Pacific Northwest. We will investigate the various tribes of the regions, the geography of Alaska and the Pacific Northwest, the technology, stories, games, art, traditions, histories, and cultures of a variety of Native tribes.
This project allows Native students opportunities to learn about other cultures, as well as their own.
Students will examine how Native people have lived and continue to live in connection with their environment. Your donation will fund resources that allow students to engage with various histories and lived experiences through books, art, games and cultural practices of Native people from Alaska and the Pacific Northwest. One example of a game that relates to the concept of survival in the Pacific Northwest is the blanket toss. In Alaska, Inupiat people used to toss a person on a blanket so they could see a whale or caribou off the horizon. Once spotted, hunters would go out in the direction of the game. In this project, students will replicate this tradition, by placing a stuffed animal on a blanket and then tossing the animal in the air. Learning experiences such as the blanket toss help preserve and transmit traditional and cultural knowledge and practices from one generation to the next.
