My Students

Every day my students pledge to "Be their best, and try their best- every minute of every day!" For many of them this is a HUGE challenge. Many of them live in poverty, where parents are working hard at multiple jobs to provide food and shelter. My students have families who are trying hard to provide better lives and futures for them, and break the cycle of poverty.

These kids have hard little lives and deserve so much respect for all they overcome just to come to school.

Both students and parents do their best to provide to scrape pennies together to give donations to the classroom of pencils and cleaning wipes and tissues. I appreciate you helping to make school easier, more enjoyable, and more rewarding for them!

My Project

We are an Inter-generational Poverty, Title I school that houses a newcomer immigrant and refugee program for our district. Our school is so heavily impacted that 100% of our students qualify for free breakfast and lunch based on their families’ income. The parents of our students work hard at multiple jobs to provide food and shelter. They are unable to give their students additional opportunities and experiences -even ones in our own backyard.

We would like to enrich our students lives by showing them healthy lifestyle activities to cope with their trauma-based-backgrounds and tie the local environment into academic learning activities.

We also look for opportunities to integrate new immigrant and refugees with other school peers in ways that build friendships, respect, and ways to support individuals different from ourselves.

Our families do not have the resources to access activities that foster these skills but are right in our own backyard: such as hiking in the mountains, campfires, skiing, snowshoeing, and archery. Our newcomer students have typically never experienced snow or the activities that accompany our unique weather.

This is an opportunity for our students to build background knowledge; make connections, and foster shared experiences that can better facilitate a writing curriculum (particularly for the newcomer students that lack communication skills to share ideas). We use this knowledge to help us explore history, reading comprehension, and ties to scientific exploration. Giving students tangible experiences helps them comprehend things that they have only read or heard about, at best. We thank you in advance for supporting our students and encouraging them in both their learning and in fostering an awareness of healthy lifestyle activities.
